BMX 101

Joining BMX can be confusing! Here we will introduce the basics of the equipment, and track features

The Bike

The most important piece of equipment! NSBMX has limited number of loaner racing bikes for new riders. These are available on a first come, first served basis. Track volunteers will be happy to assist you in picking out the right size!

New riders are able to use dirt jumpers or mountain bikes while practicing or racing in the Novice category.

The Track

A BMX track is composed of a start hill, berms (corners), rhythm section, and finish line. There are various features to jump, manual, and pump. No track is the same!

Bumps and Spills

Parents—this is a big one—should your rider fall down, DO NOT run onto the track, (as much as your instincts tell you to)! A track official will assist them and call to you if you are needed.

This rule is in place for your safety as well as the riders!

The Gear

Full Face helmet - Riders on the "full track" must wear full face helmets. Half trackers may wear "park" or "street" style helmets. The track has limited number of loaner helmets available on a first come, first served basis.

Long sleeves and Long pants - Riders are allowed to wear short sleeves and shorts as long as they have elbow pads and knee/shin pads. Padding is HIGHLY recommended.

Gloves - Riders are recommended to wear racing gloves.

Enclosed Shoes - No sandals or open toe shoes!

Racing Plate

You will need a racing number on your bike. For new riders, your plate number will be the last 3 digits of your membership number. You’ll notice there are many different plates on the track. Riders earn a district ranking each year based on their points the previous year. You can also participate in Provincial, National, and Gold Cup series to earn a plate and ranking.
